Executive Summary

Fluor was awarded the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract by Dominion Virginia Power to build its new Brunswick County Power Station, a combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power station in Brunswick County, Virginia. The project investment exceeded $1 billion.

Client's Challenge

Dominion Virginia Power contracted us to provide EPCC services for its new Brunswick County Power Station. Dominion Virginia Power required a new source of electricity to replace power from two existing coal-fired units in eastern Virginia that are scheduled for retirement.

Fluor's Solution

We provided EPCC services for the 1,358-megawatt natural gas-fueled power station, located on a 205-acre site on U.S. Route 58 east of Lawrenceville, Virginia. The plant was designed at our engineering office in Charlotte, North Carolina. The project was completed with more than 1,500 construction staff onsite during peak construction activity.

The Brunswick County Power Station began producing electricity for its customers in April 2016. The power station produces enough electricity to power 340,000 homes. New power output from the Brunswick County facility was intended to replace electricity generated by existing coal units at two stations in eastern Virginia that would be retired.

Conclusion

The Brunswick County Power Station began producing electricity in April 2016, supporting Dominion Virginia Power's goal to provide its customers with clean and reliable energy.

The Brunswick County Power Station was named the 2016 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Mid-Atlantic Best Project in the Energy/Industrial Sector, and was also recognized with the 2016 ENR Mid-Atlantic Excellence in Safety Award.

The project was also named the overall 2016 Power Engineering Project of the Year, as well as the 2016 Power Engineering Natural Gas-Fired Project of the Year.

In 2017, Power Magazine recognized the facility as a 2017 Top Plant in Gas-Fueled.

Fluor also completed Dominion's Bear Garden Station in Buckingham, Virginia, similarly fueled by clean-burning natural gas.

Not long after this project, Fluor began construction on Dominion's new Greensville County Power Station late 2016. The 1,600-megawatt combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power station is located seven miles from the Brunswick County Power Station.
